Guadelupe Mtns. Nat'l park
These pictures were taken at the height of fall color in McKittrick Canyon and the Devil's Hallway of Guadelupe Nat'l Park. The area was an inland sea 170 million years ago with a huge reef formation. The sea departed, tectonic pressure lifted the area under neath the reef creating a mountain with a reef on top. The resulting limestone deposit creates innumerable pathways for water to travel into the mountain canyons thus creating spaces with trees not usually seen in West Texas. Elms, maples and hickory create fall color of spectacular beauty when set off by the mountains or boulders in the canyons.
